Over-phone and online interpreting are two forms of language interpretation that have gained significant popularity in recent years. Over-phone interpreting allows individuals to access interpretation services remotely through a phone call, providing real-time assistance in bridging language barriers.

On the other hand, online interpreting utilizes video conferencing platforms, enabling users to communicate with interpreters face-to-face virtually. Both methods offer convenience and flexibility, ensuring that language barriers are overcome efficiently in various professional settings.

These innovative solutions have proven to be invaluable for industries such as healthcare, legal, and business, where accurate and timely communication is crucial. With advancements in technology, over-phone and online interpreting continue to revolutionize the way cross-linguistic communication is facilitated.

Over-phone and online interpreting  – How Does it Work?

The customer contacts our Project Manager and agrees on the time and language combination of the service, as well as providing information regarding the subject matter of the conversation and other specific information.

At a fixed time, the customer’s representatives and the interpreter shall call in to our system and the interpreting can begin. The process is exactly the same as in case of consecutive interpreting – the interpreter translates the fragments of a conversation in a consecutive manner and provides communication between people who do not share a common language. This technique of interpreting is widely used in interviews, discussion of agreement, obtaining information from foreign countries and in other business transactions.

Is It Necessary to Rent Specific Conference Equipment?

No, interpreting takes places via the most ordinary fixed-line telephone or mobile telephone.

Confidentiality

Baltic Media Ltd has signed confidentiality agreements with all of our suppliers on withholding information from any third parties; moreover, a unique access code is generated for each conference, which is only known to the interpreter and customer’s representatives. That eliminates any unauthorised wiretapping of the conversation.

Can Several People Participate in the Conversation?

The greatest advantage of this system is that unlimited number of people can join the conference. However, in such cases it is important to keep in mind that there is only one interpreter and he/she can only translate the speech of one person at a time.

Are There Any Limitations to the Duration of the Conversation?

No, however, if the duration of the conversation is planned to exceed one hour and a half, we ask you to inform our Project Manager about that in advance in order for us to involve another Interpreter in case it is necessary to take over the interpreting.

Over-phone and online interpreting |  Is It Expensive?

The costs are directly dependent upon the language combination for the interpreting as well as on text complexity. Our Project Manager will inform you about the exact costs of the service; however the costs are definitely about half as much as hiring an interpreter on the spot.

What should I consider when ordering interpretation over the phone?

When ordering interpretation over the phone (also known as Over-the-Phone Interpretation or OPI), several key factors should be considered to ensure a smooth and effective communication experience. Here's a breakdown of the important aspects:

1. Type of Interpretation:

  • Consecutive Interpretation: This is the most common mode for OPI. The speaker pauses after completing a thought or sentence, allowing the interpreter to convey the message in the target language. This method is suitable for most conversations and ensures accuracy.
  • Simultaneous Interpretation: While less common for OPI due to technical limitations, it might be possible in some cases with advanced technology. In this mode, the interpreter translates in real-time, as the speaker is talking. This is more demanding and usually reserved for specific situations.

2. Choosing a Provider:

  • Reputation and Experience: Look for a reputable language service provider with proven experience in OPI. Check for certifications, client testimonials, and industry affiliations.
  • Interpreter Qualifications: Ensure the provider uses qualified interpreters who are native speakers of the target language and have expertise in relevant fields (e.g., medical, legal, technical).
  • Language Availability: Confirm that the provider offers interpretation in the specific language pair you need.
  • Technology and Platform: Inquire about the technology used for OPI, including call quality, security measures, and platform reliability.
  • Customer Support: Choose a provider with responsive customer support available to assist with any questions or issues.

3. Preparing for the Call:

  • Clear Communication: Speak clearly and at a moderate pace. Avoid using jargon, slang, or complex sentence structures.
  • Briefing the Interpreter: If possible, provide the interpreter with background information about the call, including the topic, participants, and any specific terminology.
  • Managing the Conversation: Be mindful of the consecutive interpretation process and allow for pauses to enable the interpreter to convey the message accurately.
  • Privacy and Confidentiality: Discuss confidentiality protocols with the provider and ensure they have measures in place to protect sensitive information.

4. Technical Considerations:

  • Call Quality: Ensure a stable and clear phone connection for all participants to minimize misunderstandings.
  • Background Noise: Minimize background noise in your environment to avoid interference with the interpretation.
  • Headsets: Using headsets can improve sound quality and reduce distractions for both the speaker and the interpreter.

5. Cost and Billing:

  • Pricing Structure: Understand the provider's pricing structure, which may be per minute, per call, or based on a subscription model.
  • Minimum Charges: Inquire about any minimum charges or fees.
  • Billing Details: Clarify billing procedures and payment options.

Specific Situations:

  • Emergency Situations: For urgent situations, prioritize providers offering 24/7 availability and rapid connection to interpreters.
  • Specialized Fields: If the call involves specialized terminology (e.g., medical, legal, technical), ensure the provider has interpreters with relevant expertise.

By considering these factors, you can effectively utilize interpretation over the phone to bridge language barriers and facilitate clear communication in various situations.
