Professional and Certified Icelandic Translators

Icelandic translation services are offered by a variety of companies and organizations, both in Iceland and around the world. When choosing a translation service, it is important to consider the following factors:

  • Accuracy: It is important to choose a translation service that provides accurate and reliable translations. This means that the translators should be native speakers of Icelandic and have experience translating in the specific field or industry of the text being translated.
  • Turnaround time: If you have a deadline, it is important to choose a translation service that can meet your needs. Some Icelandic translation services offer expedited services for an additional fee.
  • Cost: The cost of Icelandic translation services can vary depending on the factors mentioned above. It is important to get quotes from multiple translation services before making a decision.

How a Translation Agency Works

  1. Each Icelandic translation goes through three stages: translation, editing and proof-reading.
  2. Icelandic translators work with such translation programs as SDL Trados Studio and Memsource, which ensure consistent terminology.
  3. Data security, storage and confidentiality are our responsibilities. Finished Icelandic translations are stored on our servers. If you ever lose your Icelandic translation, we will find it in our electronic archives.
  4. Educated, competent and service-oriented Icelandic translation project managers who constantly improve their qualifications in Icelandic project management.
  5. Civil liability insurance against any possible translation mistakes — the insurance company will compensate the loss caused to the client. While no such case has ever occurred in the history of the Baltic Media® operation, the insurance serves as an additional guarantee for the client.
  6. We work globally and have 30 years of international work experience, as our customers and translators are located on every continent.
  7. Additional services include layout design for Icelandic translations and pre-print preparation. When submitting the copy for Icelandic translation to us, you may choose to receive the layout ready to print. We offer a layout design service (DTP — Desktop Publishing).

Icelandic Language | Why is Icelandic so unique?

Language family: Indo-European languages, Germanic languages, Icelandic

Icelandic is the most unchanged of the major Nordic languages. Modern Icelandic has preserved the grammar of the language essentially unchanged since the Middle Ages. The Icelandic government also ensures, through a language council, that as many new words as possible are given Icelandic forms either through translation or new formulations. There are few foreign loan words in Icelandic as a result.

Official language of: Iceland
Language code ISO 639-1: IS

The Icelandic language boasts a number of features that set it apart:

  • A Living Fossil: Icelandic is a North Germanic language, rooted in Old Norse spoken by the Vikings. Unlike other Scandinavian languages, Icelandic has undergone much less change over the centuries, making it remarkably similar to its ancient ancestor. This allows modern Icelandic speakers to read Old Norse sagas with relative ease!

  • Pure and Protective: Icelandic is known for its purity. Due to Iceland's isolation, the language wasn't heavily influenced by other languages. Instead of borrowing words, Icelanders prefer to create new ones based on their existing vocabulary . This is actively encouraged by the Icelandic Language Institute, which safeguards the language's purity.

  • Grammatical Complexity: Icelandic grammar is quite complex compared to modern Germanic languages. It retains features like four grammatical cases for nouns (similar to German, but more intricate) and complex verb conjugations, making it a fascinating subject for linguists.

  • Pronunciation Shift: Interestingly, while Icelandic grammar and vocabulary have remained conservative, pronunciation has changed quite a bit from Old Norse. Vowel sounds, in particular, have evolved significantly.

These unique characteristics make Icelandic a bridge to the past, a window into the world of the Vikings, and a testament to Iceland's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
