What's the Difference Between Translation and Interpretation?
Interpretation is often confused with translation. The difference is that interpreters work with the spoken word whilst translators deal with written texts.
Translation and interpretation are both language services that involve transferring meaning from one language to another. However, there are some key differences between the two.
- Medium: The main difference between translation and interpretation is the medium. Translation is the process of transferring meaning from a written text in one language to a written text in another language. Interpretation, on the other hand, is the process of transferring meaning from a spoken language in one language to a spoken language in another language.
- Timing: Translation can be done over a period of time, with the translator having access to reference materials and other resources. Interpretation, on the other hand, is done in real time, and the interpreter must be able to understand and produce the target language quickly and accurately.
- Context: Translators have more time to consider the context of the text they are translating, such as the genre, the intended audience, and the cultural references. Interpreters, on the other hand, must be able to understand and convey the meaning of the spoken language in real time, even if they do not have all of the context.

Types of interpreting
Consecutive
Interpreting after the speaker has finished, usually with the help of notes.
Simultaneous
Interpreting while the person is speaking, using particular equipment (eg. booths, earphones, microphone).
Retour
Working from your mother tongue into one of your passive languages. Passive language: the one from which the interpreter interprets.
Cheval
An interpreter working in two booths in the same meeting.
Whispered
The interpreter is seated or standing with the participants and interprets simultaneously directly into their ear.
Sign language
Interpreting using signs used by people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Relay
Sometimes referred to as “indirect interpreting”. The interpreters work from a language they do not understand through a bridging language.
Example: interpreting from Finnish into Slovak via a first interpretation into French
Interpreting over phone or Skype
The process is exactly the same as in case of consecutive interpreting – the interpreter translates the fragments of a conversation in a consecutive manner and provides communication between people who do not share a common language.
